Google’s digital online marketing course is unique in that it’s set up as a competition, rather than a course. You’ll compete against marketers just like you in areas like Search Advertising, Social Analytics, Video, and Search Engine Marketing. I’m sure that, especially to a beginner, this sounds overwhelming, but don’t worry; they offer an actual Digital Marketing course to help you learn and understand the concepts of online marketing before attempting the challenge. At the end of the course you’re awarded a certificate of completion, and they even offer prizes to the winners of each region of the competition (for Europe, America, the Middle East, and Asia) in the form of donations to non-profit partners and even trips to their Headquarters for the Global and Regional winners.
Since then, many readers, students and not, have reached out and asked about how they can learn digital marketing. It’s a field that’s been ravaged by spammy information and bad ebooks, and it’s difficult to know where to start and what’s worth learning. I’ve been giving out some form of this advice for the last two years, so I figured it would make sense to organize it and provide it here, for anyone motivated enough to follow it.

These websites can either be dedicated to one topic (e.g., world news) or look more like an online magazine with dozens of topics. They provide regular content (articles, columns), and can profit from placing affiliate banners and ads on their pages. In addition, they may provide so-called sponsored content that revolves around an affiliate product/service or includes links to the texts themselves. For instance, links can be added to articles that contain certain lists — e.g., “5 Best Coffee Shops in Toronto” or similar.


Teachable and Udemy are two of many, but these are the most prevalent, and they’re both intuitive and user-friendly. With Teachable, you have more control over your pricing and the look and feel of your course, but you don’t get a built-in audience. Instead you have to do all the marketing yourself. Udemy has a built-in base of students, but you don’t have as much control and they take more of your revenue.
Businesses leverage various digital channels, such as search engines, social media, email, and their websites to connect with current and prospective customers. At a high level, digital marketing refers to advertising delivered through these digital channels. This term covers a wide range of marketing activities, such as paid search, organic SEO, social media marketing, affiliate marketing, content marketing, video marketing, and so much more.
